Racing Victoria (RV) is one of Australia’s leading sporting organisations and the independent governing body of thoroughbred racing in Victoria. The Opportunity
We have a rare and exciting opportunity for someone to join our Integrity Services team as either a Cadet Steward or Deputy Steward. The successful incumbent will undergo a development program with a view to a progressive career in stewarding. The Cadet/Deputy Steward will be exposed to all areas of the Integrity Services Department and Racing Victoria.
In this role you will assist us in achieving RV’s goal of “Racing for All” – more people more often engaging and enjoying our sport. Specifically, this will be done through the application of best practice integrity principles and administration of the Rules of Racing in Victoria
In a typical week you will;
- Assist in the preparation and evaluation of race meetings through checks on the gear to be worn by competing horses; attend race meetings, trial and track work.
- Assist stewards in the timely presentation of race meetings.
- Identify horses, checking the eligibility of competing horses to race including suspensions or warnings, trainers’ licenses, registrations of syndicates, and that the ownerships of all horses correspond to RV policy
- Interact with a diverse range of key stakeholders, licensed and registered participants.
About you
As the successful candidate, you must possess the following:
- A passion for ensuring the welfare of our participants, equine athletes and upholding integrity through the rules of racing:
- A willingness to develop skills, knowledge and capabilities, specifically around racing analytics, evidence, quasi-judicial processes, regulatory environments and specific rules of racing.
- Knowledge of the thoroughbred horse racing industry
- Knowledge of the thoroughbred horse, with particular emphasis on equine welfare, with horse handling and husbandry skills
- The ability to engage in respectful conversations with a range of industry participants, on a variety of matters pertaining to the rules of racing and integrity of our sport;
- An ability to be articulate in both written and verbal communications, and with a broad range of stakeholders.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills coupled with sound judgement
- Ability to engage with personal courage.
- A natural curiosity, pragmatism and strong commitment to upholding the principles of natural justice.
- the ability to work in a role which requires flexibility in hours, travel and at multiple workplaces across Victoria.
