Racing Victoria (RV) is one of Australia’s leading sporting organisations and the independent governing body of thoroughbred racing in Victoria. We develop, promote and manage the conduct of the racing of thoroughbred horses in Victoria to safeguard its integrity.

The Opportunity:

An opportunity has become available for employment as Starter / Assistant Starter in Eastern Victoria.  The vacancy arises following a recent retirement.   The position is a casual position and would ideally suit an individual looking for a second job noting that the volume of work may vary significantly over the course of the year.   There will also be the requirement for travel to racecourses across Eastern Victoria.

The Role:

The key responsibilities of a Starter include:

  • Manage and control the process of horses being loaded into the starting barriers including directing jockeys, barrier attendants, vets, clerks of course and farriers to ensure that the loading process is conducted, efficiently, safely and in accordance with the Rules of Racing
  • Liaise with Stewards regarding any issues that may occur at the start
  • Physically inspecting horses to confirming the identity of all runners using brands and markings sheet
  • Ensure horses are loaded into the starting barriers in accordance with any approved gear as directed by the stewards
  • Liaise with stewards in relation to any incidents at the starting barriers including reporting horses for behaviors which delay or compromise the safety of persons and or horses in the starting process
  • Ensure Raceday Officials comply with raceday policies and procedures
  • Support the Regional Manager in addressing issues relating to raceday officials which may arise during the course of a race meeting

The Individual:

Selection Criteria for the Role include:

  • Experienced horse person with knowledge of horse behaviors. (Previous experience as a starter will be well regarded)
  • Strong knowledge of the Australian Rules of Racing particularly rules pertaining to horse gear requirements and starting procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team
  • Articulate communicator
  • Ability to make timely decisions in a high pressure environment and remain calm
  • Demonstrated commitment to Racing Victoria values including Honesty, Excellence, Engagements, Safety and Wellbeing
  • Reside in Eastern Victoria or prepared to relocate to Eastern Victoria
  • Declarations in accordance with Racing Victoria’s conflict of interest policy
  • Satisfactory Police Check
