Racing Victoria (RV) is one of Australia’s leading sporting organisations, and the independent governing body of thoroughbred racing in Victoria. We develop, promote and manage the conduct of the racing of thoroughbred horses in Victoria to safeguard its integrity. 

Now we can help you get started in your career as Trackwork Rider or Stablehand via two new workforce initiatives.

The Stable Start and Slow Track Rider courses focus on supporting newcomers to the industry and providing a pathway for experienced riders to learn trackwork riding and gain employment.

What we are looking for:

We are seeking expressions of interest from applicants who would like to start a career in the thoroughbred racing industry, undertake training fully funded (subject to conditions) in preparation for placement in employment with one of the Registered Racehorse Trainers in Victoria. 

Past horse racing industry experience is not essential, but you must be confident to handle horses.

Those seeking to start a career as a Trackwork Rider must have the appropriate level of horse riding skills, that will be supplemented with trackwork riding skills and knowledge.

Employment locations will be available throughout Victoria but in the first instance will be located in South East Melbourne and Ballarat.  The hours of work will vary depending upon your needs and the employers.

About you:
You will have a love of the horse and an interest in horse racing, thrive in a collaborative, fast paced and hands on outdoor team environment. Some of the attributes and experience you will have include:

  • Experience in owning or working with horses preferred, or a passion for horse racing and willingness to learn
  • You need to be physically fit as working with horses is largely manual tasks working outdoors
  • Reliable and able to work early mornings and/or late afternoon or all day if you are race day strapping
  • Have pride and attention to detail in your work and enjoy being part of a team that works together to achieve success
  • Ability to follow policies and procedures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of people and horses
  • To be employed in the Racing Industry you will need to complete an initial and annual registration which is subject to Racing Victoria's Suitability Policy.

What we offer:

  • Training to complete the licensing requirements for Stable Employees, the cost will be fully funded subject to conditions
  • Nationally recognised training qualifications and statement of attainment

Stable Start training course for those seeking to be employed as a Stablehand, you will complete mandatory training and have basic skills and confidence to be workforce ready. To be conducted at Cranbourne Training Centre, Northern Lodge (Eden Park), Wangaratta and Ballarat Turf Club. 

Slow Trackwork Rider training for experienced riders not working in the industry or those working as stable hands that would like to start a career as a slow trackwork rider with training at Melbourne Polytechnic Northern Lodge.

The Stable Start and Slow Track Rider courses focus on attracting newcomers and providing a pathway for experienced riders to learn trackwork riding. RV funds the gap in course fees (after government funding) and after 3 months employment.
