Industry Training – Stable Start and Trackwork Riding

What’s on offer:

Racing Victoria (RV) has taken steps to boost its support for industry participants to advance their career  and to provide a pathway for people who would like to start a career in the Racing industry to receive training to prepare them for employment and assistance in finding an employer. 

Slow Trackwork Rider, this course creates a great opportunity for current stable employee’s who have appropriate riding skills, to continue working while learning the necessary skills to get started and be accredited as a trackwork rider.  For experienced riders who have not ridden trackwork, this is a pathway to commence a career as a Trackwork rider.  The course will also enable those commencing work as a slow trackwork rider to meet their mandatory training licensing requirements.

Stable Start, this is course is aimed at preparing those who have not worked in Racing to acquire the basic skills.  You do not have to have horse experience to start work in the industry.  Training is also available for those that have just started employment as a stablehand and have not yet completed the mandatory training.

We are seeking expressions of interest from people:

  • who would like to start a career as a stable hand or trackwork rider,
  • complete mandatory stable employee training, or/and
  • complete trackwork rider accreditation.   

What we offer:

  • Training to complete the mandatory licensing requirements for Stable Employees first registered for the 2023/24 season
  • Training for stable employees who are experienced riders to prepare you to start slow track work riding
  • 2023/2024 newly registered trackwork riders can complete their trackwork rider accreditation for licensing
  • Nationally recognised training qualifications and statement of attainment
  • Subject to conditions your training will be fully funded, you can be trained for free
  • Assistance to find employment

Stable Start – 5 days training, depending on training location this may vary from 1 to 5 days per week, you will be advised at time of expressing your interest.  Training locations include Cranbourne Training Centre, Geelong Turf Club, Warrnambool, Ballarat Turf Club and GoTafe Wangaratta. 

Slow Trackwork Rider training is usually 1 day per week for 12 weeks.  If you already have the required trackwork riding skills you may be fast tracked through the course and may not need to attend 12 weeks 

Racing Victoria will fund the gap in course fees (after government funding) there will be no cost to those attending these courses, however you are expected to commence work in the industry.
