About the Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a Resident – Official Racing Veterinarian to provide veterinary services (regulatory) including at race meetings, official trials, the Werribee International Horse Centre and required non-raceday inspections.

You will provide these raceday veterinary services (regulatory) along with expert advice to ensure that horses participating in thoroughbred racing in Victoria are physically suitable to compete and are presented for racing free of prohibited substances in accordance with the Rules of Racing. You will liaise with and provide advice to Stipendiary Stewards and other relevant industry stakeholders on issues pertaining to heath and welfare of thoroughbred horses and also with regard to their suitability to race.

You will develop in the role, whilst undertaking a research project (preferably a Masters degree) to enhance the safety and welfare of racehorses and integrity of racing. You will be provided with the opportunity to visit other racing jurisdictions to grow your understanding of horse racing and identify opportunities to improve veterinary services policy.

About You

You will be a degree qualified veterinarian, registerable in the State of Victoria, and you will have been for qualified for at least 3 years. You will have experience in veterinary practice, equine preferred, with the ability to make clinical decisions rapidly and under intense scrutiny.

Acting decisively, you will be able to anticipate risk, use effective judgement, prioritise work, delegate appropriately and communicate well to resolve complex problems and make potentially tough decisions. In your day to day work you model the highest standards of ethical behaviour and instill them in others.

Your ability to build and sustain strong relationships, engaging with, understanding and delivering solutions to a range of stakeholders, will also be important to the role. You will confidently present messages in a clear, concise and articulate manner to all stakeholders.
Importantly you will be physically and mentally capable of carrying out the duties required with the role.
